Cookies are data transmitted by websites to be stored on the user's computer.

Thanks to cookies, it is possible to save information about the user (used browser and operating system, location), his personal settings and preferences (for example, currency or font size). These files are necessary for the normal functioning of some sites.

At the same time, cookies are temporary or session (they are deleted immediately after you close the tab with the site) and permanent (they are stored for a long time). Which type to use is up to the site developer. If desired, in the browser settings, you can generally disable the acceptance of cookies, however, in this case, the user will inevitably encounter limitations in the functionality of the sites visited.

Technically, cookies are simple text files that contain certain information. They cannot interact with other programs or cause any harm to the operating system. However, cookies can be used by attackers to steal the user's personal data. The fact is that they can be easily intercepted when using an insecure connection. For this reason, the use of public Wi-Fi hotspots in public places can pose a data security risk.

The history of cookies began at the dawn of the Internet, they were first used in 1994. Today they are ubiquitous and their support is mandatory for modern browsers and enabled by default. At the same time, under the new legislation, the owners of sites using cookies are required to warn visitors about this - the corresponding pop-up notifications can be seen almost everywhere today.
