Webhook

Webhook  is a mechanism used to notify about events that have occurred in the system.

This mechanism was developed specifically to simplify the procedure for notifying about a wide variety of events. This can be adding a new user, changing settings, or a new message. As soon as the event we are interested in has happened, the system immediately sends a notification.

It is the sending of a message that is the main difference between Webhook and the API. And if in the second case, the application waiting for data must periodically send requests to find out if the event has occurred, then using a webhook means that as soon as this event occurs, a notification will be sent about this. You just need to specify exactly where this notification should be sent and in response to what events.

In other words, the behavior of webhooks can be roughly described as follows: there is no need to regularly check if an event has happened, as I will let you know when it happens.

For the first time, webhook technology was used in 2007. It was invented by programmer Jeff Lindsay. He is also the author of the term “webhook”, which he created based on the term “hook”, which is the name of the mechanism for making changes to how the system usually behaves.
