GPT Store by OpenAI: Marketplace for Custom AI Bots
Recently, OpenAI finally presented the GPT Store, announced three months ago. During this time, users have developed over three million custom versions of ChatGPT and are ready to share them with the community. In this article, we will tell you everything that is known about the new GPTs marketplace today.
What is GPT Store?
In November 2023, OpenAI allowed third-party developers to create customized versions of its smart chatbot, ChatGPT. The new feature was released as part of the DevDay event. From then on, users can modify and refine the AI GPT model by training it on their own data or through the integration API. Thus, the company has improved the standard capabilities of its neural network, making it more functional and specialized than the original GPT-4-based version of ChatGPT.
Previously, personalized versions of ChatGPT were available for distribution only in the form of links, and there was no official scheme for monetizing such content. The emergence of the GPT Store solved this problem by providing the community with a marketplace of AI applications for various highly specialized tasks. OpenAI talked about the procedure for creating and posting customized versions of GPT in the GPT Store. According to its representatives, the process does not take much time and does not require programming skills. You just need to perform a few steps:
- Save the application created based on ChatGPT in the public domain.
- Verify the developer profile (Settings → Builder profile → Enable your name or a verified website).
Before adding a custom model to the database, you should study the usage policy and guidelines for using the GPT brand. All user applications undergo comprehensive testing with the participation of artificial intelligence and human moderators.
OpenAI plans to share revenue with developers of custom versions of ChatGPT, as company CEO Sam Altman promised during DevDay. Unlike classic marketplaces, the GPT Store does not involve the purchase and sale of GPTs. At the moment, the company has not yet provided an exact description of its content monetization model. It is reported that developers will be able to earn income based on user interaction with their AI applications. At first, monetization will be available only to US residents. Details will be published before the launch of this option in the first quarter of 2024.
Owners of the ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs $20 per month, will be able to use OpenAI's GPT Store. It is also available to users of the ChatGPT Team and Enterprise plans. Free account holders can not yet use GPTs and publish their GPTs on the marketplace.
What AI Apps are Available in the GPT Store?
Any ChatGPT Plus user can already familiarize themselves with the capabilities of the AI application catalog in the smart chatbot interface. Its main advantage is its specialization—in a couple of clicks, users can find here dozens of specialized GPT models tailored for a specific area and task. OpenAI claims that the GPT Store will be updated with new custom versions of GPTs weekly. Now it has a design that is quite traditional for a marketplace, with a search bar and thematic categories. Among them are the following sections:
- Top Picks (the most popular apps of the week)
- DALL-E (applications based on the text-to-image neural network of the same name)
- Writing (applications for generating and editing text)
- Productivity (applications to increase productivity in different processes)
- Research & Analysis (applications for searching, evaluating, interpreting and visualizing data)
- Programming (applications for code generation, debugging, testing and programming training)
- Education (applications for mastering new knowledge and skills)
- Lifestyle (applications with recommendations for travel, workout, style, nutrition, etc.)
At the time of writing, the Top Picks category includes AllTrails apps with personalized route recommendations, a search engine for 200 million scientific papers Consensus, Code Tutor from Khan Academy for teaching coding, and a book search engine Books.
New ChatGPT Team Plan
Along with the release of the GPT Store, OpenAI introduced a new ChatGPT Team plan, designed for teams of all sizes and formats. Its subscribers get access to a private section of the new marketplace, where they can collectively use AI applications through their workspace. It also allows you to create custom versions of GPT and share them with colleagues. Users are offered an administrative console with team and workspace management options, as well as early access to new features and product improvements.
Also, available on this plan are advanced service tools, including GPT-4 with a 32K context window, text-to-image neural network DALL-E 3 and Advanced Data Analysis, formerly known as Code Interpreter. The ChatGPT Team plan costs $25 per month per user when purchasing an annual subscription, or $30 per month per user when purchasing monthly. Subscribers to the ChatGPT Enterprise plan for large companies will also be able to use the GPT Store. The developers promise to provide them with advanced management options—for example, choosing how to share custom GPTs, etc.
Conclusion
The emergence of the GPT Store begins a new stage in the development of not only the ChatGPT chatbot itself, but also the entire generative AI industry. The marketplace turns this neural network into a full-fledged ecosystem, opening up the possibility of releasing and distributing millions of specialized AI applications for different areas and tasks. At the same time, the issue of monetization of its content remains not entirely clear. However, we are confident that OpenAI will present a clear payment model in the near future.
